About the menu

Confeitaria Símbolo in Vila Nova de Gaia is a true gem for anyone seeking an authentic Portuguese coffee shop experience. The menu shines with generous, well-crafted francesinhas—rich yet never greasy—perfectly paired with crisp, lightly salted fries. Their pastéis de carne are a standout, offering a savory delight that keeps guests coming back. For those with a sweet tooth, the croissants deserve special praise: moist, fresh, and with a texture that lasts days, they are a testament to traditional baking mastery. The pastry selection also includes classic egg tarts, delivering that unmistakable creamy, flaky bite. On Sundays, the lunchtime offerings like Cod Braga and Tripa Porto highlight regional flavors, giving a true taste of local cuisine. Beyond the food, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, enhanced by friendly staff and reasonable prices. Whether grabbing coffee, working with WiFi, or enjoying a meal, Confeitaria Símbolo promises a memorable, comforting dining experience in the heart of Gaia.

This place is an absolute must-visit for us every time we’re in Porto/Gaia. We genuinely love it here. The staff has always been kind to us, and at this point we’ve tried almost everything on the menu. The francesinhas are delicious, generous, and not greasy. The fries are also not too salty. I’m obsessed with their pastéis de carne, and while I personally find the pastéis de Chaves a bit too greasy, that’s just a matter of taste. Their coffee is excellent, and we find the prices to be very fair. I’ve seen some comments saying the staff is rude to foreigners, and I honestly don’t agree. It’s true that they seem to favor locals or people who speak Portuguese, but that feels natural in a place that clearly caters to regulars rather than tourists. It’s not a tourist trap — it’s a local spot, and that’s exactly what makes it special. We’ll definitely keep coming back.
